George Washington

George Washington: He was born in Virginia. He was a farmer. He became a brave leader of soldiers. He was the first President of the United States. He is known as the "Father of Our Country."
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin: He proved that electricity was present in lightning through his kite experiment. He started the first library and the first volunteer fire department in America.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln: He was born in a log cabin. He taught himself how to read. He became a United States President. He was known as "Honest Abe."
George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver: He was an African American who studied science and plants. He became a teacher. He developed hundreds of uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans.

Patriotic Symbols to Know:

U.S. Flag

American Flag: The United States flag has 13 stripes. Seven are red and 6 are white. It also has 50 white stars on a blue background. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The 50 stars represent the 50 states in the U.S.

The first U.S. flag was designed in 1777. The flag has been changed many times since then. New stars are added each time new states join the union.

bald eagle
Bald Eagle: The bald eagle is a large, powerful, brown bird with a white head and tail. The Founding Fathers chose the bald eagle to be the national bird of the United States in 1782. This majestic bird can only be found in North America.

The word "bald" does not mean that this bird has no feathers. Instead, it comes from the word piebald, an old word which means "marked with white."

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty: This statue is located in New York. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom throughout the world. The Statue was actually a gift from the people of France.

Washington Monument

The Washington Monument: This is located in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall. It has four sides and is made out of stone. It honors George Washington, who was the "Father of our Country," a General, a Founding Father, and the first president of the United States.
